Designing Your Mural
The best starting point for inspiration is yourself :
your interests, holiday destinations, favourite birds etc..
Artists throughout the centuries have included personal elements
in their paintings: Van Gogh's love of sunflowers inspired a series
of paintings, and the painting known as Vincent's Chair
includes his pipe, tobacco and hankerchief.
When designing a mural for clients it can be fun to include an element
that links the scene to them - maybe a favourite bottle of wine.
This is the inspiration & design stage and I feel that this can be more
of a challenge than the actual painting of the mural on the wall.
I always produce a scaled colour concept sketch for my clients so they
can see what I have in mind (a picture paints a thousand words).
It makes it easier for clients to have a positive input to the formation of
the design concept. it is also much easier to make alterations at this stage
rather than when I am half-way up a ladder painting the mural so its easy
to appreciate why I feel this is a very worthwhile process.
When surveying the site for the proposed mural I take measurements
of everything - heights of walls, skirting, location of power-points
and light switches, furniture, windows etc.. all these things can
have an impact on how the mural needs to be designed.
I have included a selection of concept designs that you can view,
some of them have been transformed into murals that can be
seen in the gallery pages (see if you can recognise them).
